被top universities(顶尖大学)拒绝的人们,最后绝大多数都去了录取率高得多的fine universities(优秀大学),比如UCLA,

Duke University,

Duke”

"It is, I think, salubrious and worthwhile for us all to meditate, from time to time, on the great theme of mutability and transience, to mortify our overweening vanity, and to say with the preacher, ‘What profit hath a man of all his labour, . . .’ and so forth. What, after all, is Fame? And what, Celebrity? Fleeting evanescences, mere toys and illusions. I know you will think this simple modesty in me, and dismiss it with a casual wave of the hand. But when you attain to my age and gravity, you will know that some of those goals, which in your youth seemed the only possible or valuable target upon which attention could seriously be fixed, turn out in the end to be gossamer-friendly or utterly

Mid-life crisis?

Struggling with my work recently, I've always tried to find a way to understand my prospective clients. Yet I have not found any way so far. When me and my clients sat across a desk, I felt so distant and far away from them. I tried so hard to read their hearts and minds, however that seemed to me like an act of God. Students at many renowned institutions hold a great deal of pride with their identity. I, a graduate from a low-life university, couldn't seem to get into their circles. That has troubled me so much and has put me down on a path of misery.

Nearly married, burden of the whole world seems to be thrown onto my shoulders. I need to make more money to take care of my wife and for

[Adapted] Finding a Billing Model to Fit Your Startup

THIS IS AN ARTICLE FROM July, 2012

Over the past decade, as offerings of all kinds have shifted to Web-based delivery, there's been a paradigm shift away from traditional business models that are built around a single "pay and go away" type transaction to recurring revenue models that emphasize continuous relationships and transactions for a more predictable revenue stream.

Picture this: You're a young entrepreneur who's had that a-ha! moment that most only ever dream of. You've found your niche, built your offering, compiled an impressive team of engineers and salespeople that checkbook-wielding VCs are drooling over -- you're nearly ready to take the world by storm.

THIS IS AN ARTICLE FROM JAN, 2009

Not only are most of the hottest Web 2.0 startups unprofitable, quite a few lack viable revenue models altogether. This has led cynics like me to criticize these startups quite harshly over the past several years.

Twitter, for instance, is the perfect example of the prototypical Web 2.0 startup that has captured the hearts and minds of the Web 2.0 "community" but hasn’t captured any real money (outside of venture capital).

When confronted with questions about the financial viability of their hottest startups, Web 2.0 proponents usually have a similar response: Rome wasn’t built in a day. When Google launched, we’re reminded, it didn’t

Euro 2012: Are Spain the best team of all time? [Adapted]

Spain thrashed Italy 4-0 in the final of Euro 2012 in Kiev on Sunday to win their third major tournament in a row.

Vicente del Bosque led his side to an emphatic victory in Ukraine to become the first coach to win a World Cup, a European Championship and a Champions League title.

Spain have now won the last two European Championships and the last World Cup in South Africa.

So are they the best national side to play the game?

Foreign students 'queue jumping' for Cardiff University places, Daily Telegraph claims

An investigation by the Daily Telegraph claims that an agency in Beijing offered a place to a fictitious Chinese student at Cardiff Business School who had only achieved three C grades at A-level.

Undercover reporters from the paper visited Golden Arrows Consulting (金失留學), which is the official agent for more than 20 British universities, including Cardiff. An applicant would normally need two A grades and a B grade to be considered for a place, but the reporter was told that a place could be secured.

The Daily Telegraph accused universities of rejecting British applicants in favour of foreign students, who pay higher fees.

Companies doing business in China constantly struggle to convert brand awareness into loyalty. A marketer will invest furiously to ensure that his or her brand is part of consumers' consideration sets — only to see them swayed by a slightly cheaper price, a flashier promotion, or a more aggressive in-store salesperson. Many marketers wonder just how to attract and retain Chinese consumers when they are so promiscuous.

Chinese consumers will only consider buying brands they trust and like. According to a recent study we conducted, 45% of respondents believe that well-known brands stand for better quality and safety — many more than the 31% and 27% of American and French

Cost of acquisition

English going downhill as I started to read Chinese language magazines. Some some magazines are really worth reading through. I bought a magazine called "Business School (商學院)" which offered stated-of-the-art business insights and  hands-on practical business solutions. One example is that in the latest issue of Business School, an amazing equation was explained - Customer Value Equation.

Customer Value = (benefit + process)/(price + cost of acquisition)

Why is this equation good for marketers? Simple, we all know in order to sell more, we gotta show the benefits of our products, also, we gotta make the process of transaction smooth and full of happiness. But other ways of

[Adapted] Why foreign students should be the key to British prosperity?

Will the next generation of world leaders – the Manmohan Singhs, Benazir Bhuttos and Bill Clintons of the future – be educated in the UK? Our world-class universities explain why the UK is the most popular destination for international students after the US. The 400,000 that come to British colleges and universities each year make up the major component of the UK’s ?15bn-a-year education exports, and are also a source of lasting value. They take friendships and loyalties home with them that later become trade links, cultural bonds and diplomatic ties.

Britain’s universities are a globally competitive export sector and well-placed to make a greater contribution to growth. With

Tony's English-learning diary 4

Today I went shopping with my girl Candy. We shopped till we dropped this afternoon. We bought a nice overcoat for Candy, a stylish T-shirt for myself, and a pack of Vietnam-exported jackfruit chips.

Chips? Yeah, when we go to McDonald's, we love to eat French fries (long thin pieces of potato cooked in oil) (薯條), but few people actually know that in England, French fries are usually called "chips". "Potato chips", usually referred to as French fries in England, are rarely known among Chinese friends. So, how does British people actually call chips (薯片)? Well, I looked it up on the Internet, and I've found out that British people call chips "crisps". In a word, "crisp" is the British Equivalent of the word "chip".
