The Last Empress of China

Empress Elizabeth Wan Rong

Born into a rich prominent upper-class family, Wan Rong was given the English Christian name Elizebath. Wan Rong was educated in an American missionary school and was taught in English. She was a modern symbol of incorporating traditional Chinese merit with western culture. She was selected by Emperor Henry Puyi (溥儀)as his empress at the age of 17. Due to the disabilities of Puyi, Wan Rong never carried heirs of the emperor. Challenging the dracodian traditions, and because of Puyi's lack of interest in her, she had an affair with Puyi's escort and gave birth to her only child, who was killed by Puyi shortly after it was born. Wan Rong never knew what had happened to her only child. In 1923 and 1931, she donated her own belongings and possessions to the flood-devastated areas in China at the time. Being hopelessly addicted to drugs in Tientsin, she was tricked into going to Manchuria by Japanese spy and was subsequently made the empress of Manchukuo. She didn't like to serve under Japanese rule. She tried many times to escape from Manchuria but failed. She then sank into deep depression and the endless spiral went on till her death. When Japan and Manchukuo were defeated, Puyi hurried to escape, leaving the empress alone in Manchuria. She was captured by the Chinese army and imprisoned. She died of malnutrition and opium withdrawal in 1946. She was 39 years old. She was the last empress of China in over 5000 years of Chinese history.

Examples of her works and letters
