Tonys English-learning diary 2 - Tony Wong - MapleRipples

Today on the metro back home, I read HBR Breakthrough Leadership series, one of the introductions was so appealing to me that I started to recite them! First time in my life that I voluntarily recite paragraphs! Here I'd love to share that amazing paragraph with you guys!

You've heard about the importance of emotional intelligence in the workplace - that there's an incontrovertible link between executives' emotional maturity, exemplified by such capabilities as self-awareness and empathy, and their financial performance. Now, new research extends that base.

Drawing on two years of research, the authors contend that the leader's mood and his or her attendant behaviors have enormous effects on bottom line performance. Moods are, quite literally, contagious. A cranky and ruthless boss creates a toxic organization of negative underachievers; an upbeat and inspirational leader spawns acolytes for whom any challenge is surmountable. And the final link in the chain is performance: profit and loss.

...

That's not to say, the authors point out, that a leader's actions aren't crucial. But the message sent by neurological, psychological, and organizational research is startling in its clarity. Emotional leadership is the spark that ignites a company's performance.

This is it. Now let's review what we can learn what this article. Incontrovertible, means indisputable here, makes a strong stand against doubt and skepticism. Drawing on something, means to use information, knowledge, and experience for a particular purpose. "His work draws heavily on learning theories of the 1980s." draws heavily on here can be understood as depends on. Contend, originally means to compete, here means "to argue or state that something's true". "contend (that)" is the usual form under this meaning. Attendant, 本來是“出席者”的意思,就是people who show up,做形容詞的時候,表示的是“相關的”,synonyms include pertinent, relevant. Contagious, is a special word, it initially describes a disease which can be passed from person to person. But when contagious is used on a feelings, attitude, or action, it also work well. 愛是可以傳染的,用英語說就是 Love is contagious. Cranky, isn't a very typical, means eccentric, weird, or bad-tempered. Spawn,哈哈,魚兒產卵,一一下子就是成千上萬,太形象了。Surmount, despite its meaning of "on top of/ above", also means overcome.

"A message is startling in its clarity" 最好的解釋就是 the message explains itself. It's clear enough. "spark that ignites" 最能讓中國人聯想到的就是毛主席的“星星之火可以燎原”。

All right, lads, that's all for today, how do you like today's diary?
